What is Dyslexia?

 Dyslexia is a learning disorder that involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding). Also called reading disability, dyslexia affects areas of the brain that process language.

Dyslexia Legislation

 The deadline for school districts and charter schools to ensure that at least one kindergarten through third grade teacher in each school has received training related to dyslexia and the deadline for the Department of Education to develop a dyslexia screening plan are each extended one year to July 1, 2022. Accommodations for Students with Dyslexia

 Teaching students with dyslexia across settings is challenging. It is important to identify accommodations that are reasonable to ask of teachers in all classroom settings. The following accommodations appear reasonable and provide a framework for helping students with learning problems achieve in general education and special education classrooms.  

Autism & Reading Comprehension

Autism is a developmental condition that affects the way a child approaches language, communicates, plays, and relates to others. Because autism affects language, this can have a strong effect on reading comprehension. These strategies can help students who have difficulty understanding what they read
